Understanding Fats

It is becoming clear that we need fats in our diet to live a long and healthy life, fats are nutrients that give our bodies energy and also help us absorb vitamins like A, D, E and K. Fats have been shown to have a positive effect on our health all the ways down to a cellar level. From improving your skin and eye health, creating stronger bones and immune system, reducing cancer risk, improving reproductive health, fat loss and creating strong cell lipid layers.

The idea of adding more fats into your diet can be a daunting though, as the name alone makes us think that this food is going to make us fat, but this all depends on the types of fats we consume, so lets break it down to the fats that will help improve our health and drop body fat and which will cause health issue and weight gain.

 

Good fats

When we are looking for good fats we are looking for fats that are unchanged, the way nature intended them. Saturated fats are unrefined fats from animals and plants, fish oils, avocado, olives, nuts, tropical oils like coconut oil, olive oil.

These types of fats are higher in saturated fats, monounsaturated fats and omega-3’s. These fats have a positive effect on your cholesterol and weight loss.

 

Bad fats

Bad fats are refined and processed, they are no longer recognise by our bodies and are now also unstable in there make up. Trans fats and hydrogenated fats like vegetable oils, canola, sunflower, peanut, soy and corn oils all have a negative effect on your health and body composition.

These are fats are also higher in omega-6s and when fats are processed they are more likely to oxides which is like rusting food in your body and this makes them damaging to your health.

 

Low fat

These are foods where the fat has been taken out to make a food have less of a fat content, when this is done food manufactures replace the fat with sugar, additives and preservatives to keep the food tasting nice. This causes a huge increase in nutrient poor calories that the body just stores, leading to an increase in body fat. Stick with full fat products.

 

Bottom line

Saturated fats that come from a natural healthy source are going to improve your healthy and help you loss weight. Trans fats, hydrogenated fats, processed foods and simple carbohydrates will cause weight gain and poor health.
