Tips for health, strength, weight-loss, and nutrition

Tip of the week - Exercise every day

If you don't use your body, you will lose it.

Your muscles will become weak and flabby and you run the risk injury and tuck shop arms. Your heart and lungs won't function efficiently and stairs and hills will cripple you. Your joints and bones will be stiff and and sore and will easily inflame or break. Inactivity is as much of a health risk as smoking!

Our Paleolithic ancestors walked an average of 10km per day. There was no such thing as obesity, heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure or diabetes back then. Our bodies were designed to move on a regular basis. New studies show that only 30 minutes a day of walking not only reduces the risk of most serious diseases, but can even grow new brain cells!

HSF Tip: Get a pedometer and aim for 12,000 steps per day, weekends included.

What exercise can do for you

Fights Against Diseases
Our bodies were built to move. Regular exercise is necessary for physical fitness and good health. It reduces the risk of heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes and other diseases. It can improve your appearance and delays the aging process.

Enhances Posture & Flexibility
A well balanced workout combined with stretching is also important for good posture. Improving your core and back strength while stretching your chest and shoulders will help everyone who sits at a desk all day. If you have stiff and tense areas like your hips and lower back or upper back or neck, exercising and stretching can loosen you up and help you feel more relaxed.

Controls Weight
Exercise is one of the key ways to control your body fat. When you are exercising you are also less likely to make poor food or drink choices as you have worked so hard.  Weight training burns more calories than simply running as you are working every muscle in the body to its limit instead of just your legs. Weight training also builds lean muscle, which increases your rest metabolic rate, so you burn more body fat when you are still.

Improves Quality of Life
Once you begin to exercise regularly, you will discover new strength, feelings of confidence and empowerment. Not only will you improve your mood, you will sleep more soundly and awake feeling fresher and less stressed, ready to tackle your day. Exercise can keep you looking and feeling younger for the rest of your life.
